As of August 2019, the improvement works of the gap to the Mirador begin. It is no longer the UGK Foundation that deals with a work that becomes great. In fact, the mayor of the municipality of Chajul has achieved not only one project, but two. With the road in good condition, the necessary materials for the construction of five classrooms and six bathrooms can be transported to the village. The vice president of the Cooperativa Estrella Polar y Cocode del Mirador, Hortenico Cifuentes, as well as Keren Guevara, one of the teachers at the beneficiary school, kindly send us photos often so that we are always aware of the progress of the work.

In February 2020 we went up to the Mirador by car again, much faster this time, because the widened road is left without ditches, with ballast and gutters where there is a risk of water infiltration. As we are in the harvest season, we meet only with the vice mayor and the Cocode who show us the five almost finished classrooms and the patio that could also be a basketball court. We are sorry that Mayor Pedro Caba Caba does not share with us, who has supported us in various projects in recent years. In mid-January he has finished his errand and is in another activity. From the visit, the images of the classrooms and of the working people remain in the mind that, despite memories of sad years spent in the mountains during the armed conflict and although they live in precarious conditions, continue with confidence in a better future - producing year with year a quality organic coffee.

Shortly after, weeks of great concern about the coronavirus follow. The school is closed, it is forbidden to move freely and the situation becomes even more complicated when the drought causes a serious problem due to lack of water. However, Cocode Hortenico Cifuentes informs us that the new mayor of Chajul is still interested in the development and well-being of the village. The most recent photos show that the windows and doors are being put up and that Picups arrive to supply the population with water.

The idea was to celebrate the inauguration in March 2020, which could not be done due to the pandemic that still makes life difficult in Guatemala. As soon as we will receive photographs, we will update this page...
